Birmingham, Alabama — Growing to Montgomery

A stable home is the first step forward.

Supportive Hands is building supportive living housing — starting with whole homes for families in the Birmingham area, and growing toward private rooms in shared homes for single adults and homes in the Montgomery area — on steady 6–12 month leases.

  • Veterans welcome
  • Voucher holders welcome
  • Agency & program referrals welcome

The Homes

Two kinds of homes, one goal: stability

Different households need different setups. A family needs a whole house. A single adult often does better — and pays less — with a private room in a well-kept shared home. Whole-house homes come first; shared-home rooms are being added.

Whole-House Homes

For families

A full house of your own — room for parents and kids to settle in, in quiet residential neighborhoods in the Birmingham area.

  • A whole home for one household
  • A natural fit for rapid-rehousing and veteran-family placements
  • 6–12 month lease terms
  • Vouchers and program payments welcome

Private Rooms in Shared Homes

For single adults — in development

The next step we are building: your own private bedroom in a shared house, with common living areas shared with a small number of housemates — co-living that keeps costs down without giving up privacy.

  • A private bedroom that is yours alone
  • Shared kitchen and living areas
  • One person per room — the standard supportive-housing setup
  • 6–12 month lease terms

Who We Welcome

Housing for people rebuilding — and the people helping them

Whether you are looking for a home yourself or placing someone through a program, you will deal with one responsive landlord who knows the homes and answers the phone.

01

Veterans & veteran families

Veterans with spouses or children fit our whole houses now; single veterans will fit our shared homes as they open. HUD-VASH and SSVF referrals are welcome.

02

Families

Parents with children who need a whole house — including families coming through rapid-rehousing programs or holding a voucher.

03

Single adults

Adults who need an affordable, stable room of their own — including people moving out of homelessness into permanent supportive housing.

04

Voucher holders & program referrals

Housing Choice Voucher holders and clients referred by case managers, housing authorities, and community agencies — in the Birmingham area today, and in Montgomery as we grow there.

How It Works

From first call to move-in, in three steps

1

Reach out or refer

Call or email us — or send a referral if you are a case manager or agency. Tell us who needs housing, which area, and whether a whole house or a private room fits.

2

Tour & paperwork

See the home, meet us, and walk through the lease terms together. Program inspections are welcome — our homes are kept ready for review.

3

Move in & settle

Sign a straightforward 6–12 month lease and move in. One point of contact for the whole tenancy — if something needs attention, you know who to call.

Where We Are

Starting in Birmingham, growing to Montgomery

Two Alabama metros, two housing systems — homes start in Birmingham while we build landlord and agency relationships in Montgomery, so referrals can land close to the services and support people already use.

Birmingham Area

Jefferson County — including Center Point — and the wider Birmingham metro. Coordinated Entry and agency referrals welcome.

Montgomery Area

Our next area — in development. We are building our Montgomery base now: agency relationships first, homes to follow across the River Region.

For Agencies & Case Managers

A landlord who works like a partner

Placing a client is hard enough without chasing a landlord. Supportive Hands is a local landlord — now registering with housing authorities and voucher programs — offering homes for the people your programs serve — and one person who picks up, follows through, and keeps the paperwork clean.

  • One point of contact for every referral and tenancy
  • Homes ready for program inspections
  • Whole houses for families now; private rooms for single adults as shared homes open
  • Comfortable working alongside Coordinated Entry, housing authorities, VA and SSVF programs, and community agencies

Questions

Common questions

It is regular rental housing — a house or a private room — offered with stability in mind: clear lease terms, a responsive landlord, and a willingness to work with the programs and case managers who support the people living there. The home comes first; support comes through the resident’s own network and programs.

Yes. Voucher holders are welcome, and we work with agency and program payments — including veteran programs such as HUD-VASH and SSVF, and rapid-rehousing placements. If you are a case manager, call us and we will walk through what your program needs.

Leases run 6 to 12 months. That gives residents real stability — not a week-to-week arrangement — while keeping terms clear for everyone.

Both. Whole houses suit families, including veteran families. Private rooms in shared homes suit single adults — one person per room, with shared kitchen and living space.

Call 704-912-6184 or email sm@pickandhandle.com with the household size, preferred area (Birmingham or Montgomery), and the program involved. We will respond with what is available or coming open, and inspections are welcome.

We place homes in the Birmingham area (Jefferson County, including Center Point) today, and we are developing our presence in the Montgomery area.
